Fosi P3 Review: Tone Controls and Turntable Confusion

Twelve original firsthand writers examine the Fosi P3's listening differences, disputed tone settings, headphone levels and turntable setup, with each result tied to its actual user.

Scope note: This literature review concerns the Fosi Audio P3 line preamplifier and headphone output. Twelve distinct writers supply original written accounts of actual use. Power amplifiers, headphones, turntable switches and altered supplies remain attached to those accounts; the sample cannot establish a universal tube sound or a failure rate.

Adding a small preamp can put volume, tone adjustment and Bluetooth within reach. It can also add a box to a system that already works. Published accounts of the Fosi P3 support both experiences, and the sharpest disagreement concerns the apparently simple question of where its tone controls leave the signal unchanged.

Lucio Cadeddu preferred listening without the P3 before a Fosi V3. Eric, writing at Eric’s Hi-Fi Blog, preferred the combination despite losing some fine detail. Their judgments deserve their conditions, especially when other owners encountered a different problem altogether: a turntable connected without the right phono amplification.

Catalog entry 383a7ae882e2a5c8c45f identifies this component. All twelve original records and relevant follow-ups were inspected on 24 October 2026. Short owner reports qualify their concrete observations, without becoming comprehensive equipment tests.

Where the P3 belongs

Fosi’s official specification page lists Bluetooth and RCA inputs, variable line outputs and a headphone socket. The P3 needs a separate speaker amplifier or powered speakers. Its RCA input takes a line-level signal; a turntable cartridge generally needs a phono stage to raise its much smaller signal and apply the required frequency correction.

That distinction explains why a box called a preamp can still be the wrong first box after a turntable. In MrMoonglass’s account, a Technics SL-BD20 remained quiet through the P3 and V3 while phone Bluetooth played at a useful level. Connecting the turntable directly to the V3 did not solve the low level. Because the stated chain lacked a phono stage and the original poster did not confirm a completed repair, the account documents the unsuccessful configuration without proving how that owner eventually resolved it.

jamesoliverfox documented the opposite configuration error. An AT-LPW50PB fed a Box X5 phono stage, then the P3, V3 and Dali Spektor 2 speakers. The turntable was initially set to LINE, placing its internal phono amplification before another phono stage. After changing the switch to PHONO, jamesoliverfox confirmed that playback worked. The account supports checking that switch before blaming the P3.

nemothebeastfish heard hum with a Denon DP-300F and P3 headphones. Switching off the turntable’s phono stage removed the hum but left playback too quiet. That observation does not identify the hum’s cause, and the thread supplies no confirmed grounding repair. Removing necessary amplification can remove a symptom without producing a usable system.

The tone settings disagree

Cadeddu’s TNT-Audio review treated the center position as flat. Durwood’s Audio Reviews measurements likewise placed zero adjustment at the center. Durwood explicitly attributed a dip at the graph’s low-frequency edge to a soundcard compensation error; that dip cannot become evidence of missing P3 bass.

ThePhonograph.net team reported another behavior: the controls were flat at the fully counterclockwise position, with boost already present at the center. Because the discrepancy remains unresolved, an assumed setting could compromise a comparison before the listening begins, while the records do not establish whether production variation, method or another difference explains it.

There is a smaller hardware dispute too. Cadeddu opened the unit and reported B50K markings on its potentiometers, while Durwood described a logarithmic volume control. Neither account establishes the parts fitted to every P3. These details favor checking the actual unit’s response rather than treating a knob position or a product-wide description as settled evidence.

Listening depends on the whole chain

Eric used a Geshelli Labs J2, ELAC DBR62 speakers and a V3, turning the V3 fully up and controlling level through the P3. Eric heard more body and warmth with some reduction in fine detail, and preferred that trade. Cadeddu also tried the P3 before a V3 at maximum volume, but heard a more restricted presentation and preferred the V3 alone. Their accounts do not provide a shared, measured level reference or identical source and speakers.

HiFiDaydreaming’s ducurguz liked the P3/V3 combination’s separation when playing the 2004 remaster of Brian Eno’s Another Green World, while wanting more texture and a wider stage. The written review assesses the pair together and does not identify a complete playback chain, so its praise cannot isolate what the P3 contributed, and its author explicitly leaves the headphone socket untested.

dundondee liked the P3/V3 combination with B&W 601 S3 speakers and later reported using bass boost. Hed-Fone preferred a P3/ZA3 system’s upper-range presentation to a Rotel RX-1052, while acknowledging new speakers, an awkward comparison and possible expectation effects. Together these reports document satisfied listeners; they do not demonstrate a fixed tonal improvement that survives different systems and controls.

Headphones and ownership add limits

Eric found the volume control too sensitive with Letshuoer S12 Pro in-ear monitors, including channel mismatch at lower settings. E-Mu Teak headphones worked more comfortably; the 250-ohm DT880 produced less satisfactory bass. Durwood could drive an HD6XX but preferred the bass control of separate headphone amplifiers. Those named loads offer more useful guidance than an unrestricted claim that the socket suits every headphone.

Eric also heard hum close to the speakers with the supplied power adapter and substantially less after substituting a linear supply, while hearing no hum through the headphone socket. The change is one uncontrolled system result. It does not justify adding an expensive supply to every P3 order.

OldCanary reported two P3 units failing after roughly four weeks each, without describing the fault closely enough for diagnosis. A later reply said Fosi agreed to warranty support and covered return shipping. That follow-up establishes an offer of support, not a demonstrated completed repair. Two failures in one owner’s account cannot supply a population failure rate.

Material interests travel with the favorable reports. Durwood received a free Fosi sample and identified the purchase links as non-affiliate. ThePhonograph.net uses affiliate links. PhantomMaxx disclosed Amazon Vine equipment and an earlier Fosi reimbursement for another product; the P3 accounts describe preferred warmth in changing systems. ducurguz includes commerce links and donation requests. Other unstated supply arrangements remain unknown.

Current offer and the next comparison

On 24 October 2026, Rondoson’s P3 listing displayed USD 79.99 and an enabled Add to cart button. The currency was explicitly USD, so no conversion was required. This is an orderable retailer listing, with final delivery and charges dependent on the destination.

A useful controlled next test would first measure the tone response at minimum, center and maximum on the actual unit. It would then compare bypass and P3 routes at matched output levels, keeping the source, power amplifier, speakers and recordings fixed. A separate headphone trial would record load, channel balance and usable low-volume adjustment. None of those proposed comparisons has been performed for this article.

The P3 has a clear role when a system needs its accessible controls, wireless input or convenient headphone connection. Its published listening evidence leaves room for both preference and disappointment. Before buying it for a turntable, establish which box supplies phono amplification and which switch selects it.
