Fosi SK02 Review: Headphones, Phone Power and Controls

Twelve firsthand writers describe the SK02's desktop controls, conflicting headphone impressions and the software and power conditions behind several apparent faults.

Scope note: This literature review examines twelve original written firsthand accounts of the Fosi Audio SK02. The writers performed the listening, connections and troubleshooting described here; Drew has not tested this equipment. Follow-ups and crossposts count once per writer. Short owner accounts support only their reported use, and the selection cannot establish failure rates or a universal sound signature. Catalog entry b78f2cb51b4adac1e1f3.

A volume knob beside the keyboard can make a headphone system easier to use. The Fosi SK02 puts that knob on top of a narrow enclosure, with input and gain buttons within reach. Its appeal is straightforward. The harder question is whether the headphones, computer and phone attached to it will behave as expected.

These twelve accounts offer practical answers, but their listening judgments disagree. Several writers heard brightness; others heard warmth, and one owner heard no tonal change after switching from an audio interface. More decisive are the corrections. A reported input difference turned out to involve EQ, and a silent game resumed playing after a Windows setting changed.

What the controls provide

Fosi’s SK02 manual identifies USB and optical inputs, separate 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm headphone outputs, and a rear socket shared by analog and optical output. The USB connection supplies power. The large encoder turns indefinitely, and its press functions include playback, mute and power. It has no physical end stop that identifies the current level.

That last detail matters when changing headphones. EARL placed the unit close to a keyboard and successfully connected a smartphone, but found the knob too easy to move and the volume state difficult to read. HiFiGo supplied the sample, and the article discloses advertising. Sean also disliked the light control and flashing level indicator, despite liking the compact arrangement and using the rear output as a preamp. Fosi supplied Sean’s unit.

Pietro, writing as Kindlefirehditaly, found different behavior on an iMac and a phone. Pressing the knob controlled playback on the iMac but only muted the phone. The iMac relied on hardware volume, while the phone retained another adjustment. His sample came from HiFiGo and Fosi. Those observations make host behavior part of the product assessment; a shared USB connector does not promise identical controls.

Headphone results resist a single verdict

James Fiorucci heard excessive sharpness with a 600-ohm Beyerdynamic DT880 through the 3.5 mm output, while preferring the pairing with Denon AH-D5200 and Sony MDR-1A headphones. He also found the Audio-Technica ATH-R70x’s spatial presentation compressed. Fosi arranged his review sample. The DT880’s balanced connection was untested, so his account cannot establish that comparison.

MatAudiophiles heard a slightly warm balance and convincing depth with Fir Audio E12 and Hifiman HE1000SE, using Tidal. The inspected article does not state its sample arrangement. Its favorable account of separation conflicts with Fiorucci’s judgment, and neither review provides a matched-level experiment capable of resolving the difference across their headphones.

Pietro heard stronger bass and dynamics from an HE400SE. CompetitionIll1838 compared an HE400SE on the SK02’s high-gain 3.5 mm output with an Arturia MiniFuse 1 and reported a quieter background without a change in tonal balance. The initial account still awaited a balanced cable. Extra output capacity therefore should not become an already demonstrated improvement in bass or space.

aiden2130 liked the SK02 with a DT770 Pro X, describing less objectionable treble, but also used Equalizer APO. The account cannot separate that adjustment from the amplifier’s contribution. Give-Jotaro-a-Break used an SK02 with an Edition XS before preferring a FiiO K7 setup. That brief retrospective establishes an upgrade preference, without diagnosing an SK02 fault. The later driver complaint concerns the headphone in the subsequent setup.

Corrections are more useful than another adjective

AchoReviews initially noticed background noise with sensitive earphones. A silent-track check then produced no audible hiss, leading the writer to attribute the earlier noise to recordings. Reporting only the first observation would reverse the account’s conclusion. Fosi supplied the sample and requested release timing; AchoReviews states that the links are non-affiliate.

The same writer heard congestion with KPH40 and HD6XX headphones during louder bass passages, and found an Arya v2 less convincing than easier planar pairings. These are useful listening limits for those combinations. They are not measurements proving a particular current shortage, and the risky maximum-volume procedure described in the source is unnecessary to repeat.

TrustEmbarrassed7739 initially heard optical playback as brighter than USB with a Shuoer S12 Pro. The writer later identified Realtek EQ as the cause. That correction removes support for treating the initial report as a sonic property of optical transmission.

九荻 新 encountered silence in the PC version of Of Ash and Steel when Windows 11 used 32-bit, 384 kHz output. Selecting 192 kHz restored sound. The writer used a Fostex T50RPmk4g with its balanced cable and reported buying the SK02 through Amazon; retailer links appear in the article. The result concerns that software configuration, rather than requiring every game or listener to adopt one sample rate.

Phone power has to be specified

Front-Excuse-5457 connected a powered USB hub with a 5 V, 3 A supply and then obtained playback from a phone using Hiby Music and from a Tempotec Variations V1, including use with an AKG K612 Pro. The writer found the resulting assembly cumbersome.

That account’s broad claim that phones cannot power the SK02 does not survive the follow-up evidence. CompetitionIll1838 reported success directly from Samsung Galaxy A17 and M62 phones, while an iPhone 15 did not power it. Sean and Pietro also reported phone-powered use. Host models, battery drain and auxiliary power belong beside the claim of portability.

Current offer and an unperformed next test

On 21 October 2026, HiFiGo listed the SK02-Black at US$84.99. Its available variant and offer metadata agreed on USD and in-stock status. This is the retailer’s displayed price, with delivery and any destination charges separate; no editorial currency conversion was used.

The strongest case for this model is convenient desktop control with two headphone connections. The evidence supports checking the particular host and headphones before treating it as a portable replacement or a guaranteed sonic upgrade. An unperformed controlled test would disable input-specific EQ, match headphone output levels, document each host’s power arrangement and repeat the troublesome game setting. A buyer moving between a computer and phone needs those connection results more than another unqualified promise of extra detail.
